This is essentially the story of many of these cities. When my family moved to Raleigh in the mid 70s, the Triangle was less than half a million and now it's passed 2.1 million. Wake County alone has more than quadrupled since then to well over a million residents today.
There's a really interesting chart on the Nashville metro wiki page that shows how the Metro has grown both in population per county and as the counties were added over time for each Census year since 1950 & ending with the latest 2015 estimates. It would be really interesting to see this sort of mapping over time for each of the metros in this thread.
