Houston is not annexing any land anny time soon...If anything I expect the opposite, The City of Houston is committed towards reinvesting in its inner core right now...now its outer edges.

So the inner loop at about 90 sq miles I believe has about 600-700K people
3 Chicago city, Illinois 2,695,598 2,695,598 2,697,538 2,704,340 2,712,920 2,718,782
4 Houston city, Texas 2,099,451 2,096,798 2,102,587 2,127,412 2,160,712 2,195,914
It will be interesting to watch how long it takes Houston to catch Chicago, especially with the big push to densify downtown (and the whole inner loop) right now. And NO Houston has not annexed a single piece of land since the 1990's....these are actual population and density increases.
After the 2010 estimate, Houston trailed Chicago by 596,147 residents but after the 2013 estimate, Houston trailed Chicago by 522,868 residents. This represented a gain on Chicago of 73,279 residents in this time frame.
It didn't take long for this to become a Houston thread. Now I get why people get so annoyed with us on here. When these kind of numbers are released we are so quick to start bragging and comparing ourselves to Chicago.
You really should have known people would start bashing us about annexation and city limit size if you start talking about us passing up Chicago.
In this case I think the Houston bashing is justified because we certainly baited it.
The 2010 census proved that any attempt to guesstimate the population of a city is completely worthless. Jesus they missed Atlanta's population by 20% when the headcount was done.
And they are predicting that Chicago is gaining residents again? Bogus.
I can't wait to see Houston pass chicago. I have a feeling Houston will pick up its pace even more. Last time there were estimates in 2010, chicago supposedly had 2.9 million which was 200,000 people over estimated. Chicago has 2.7 million and might actually have less than that.
Well, I hope the numbers are accurate enough for it to be correct that Chicago is growing again, but it's certainly possible that they could be wrong. In the late 90s they were claiming that Chicago was losing people when it was in fact gaining, and before the 2010 census they claimed that Chicago had been gaining when it had in fact been losing people.
As for the people from Texas talking about how Houston will pass Chicago by a certain year, a lot can change in a few decades. We'll have to just wait and see.
Why? What does that even prove? Do you derive some personal happiness from city rankings? Does that mean somehow Houston is more relevant in the global picture?
