The US has some great islands, from the Great Lakes to the Southeast, (West Coast?). What are some of the best Islands in the USA for the following criteria:
Relaxing
Living
Partying
Nature
(PS, I'm talking about small relatively low-populated islands here, not Manhattan or Oahu).
I love Madeleine Island. It's one of the Apostle Islands, and on Lake Superior- the greatest of the Great Lakes . It's not even expensive, for what it is

Hawaii is the best......
Relaxing: Kauai
Living: Maui
Partying: Oahu
Nature: Big Island of Hawaii
Maui is my favorite Hawaiian island. I find Oahu/Honolulu/Waikiki too commercialized and crowded, though the North Shore is nice. Maui has enough action to have good dining, shopping, and nightlife selections but also has parts that feel remote and wild. Maui has the most attractive beaches and beautiful areas to explore such as the heavenly road to Hana leading you to waterfall pools and unique beaches and shoreline to hike into.
Kauai is the most beautiful, especially around the Napali Coast where hiking can be adventuresome. The Big Island offers the most diversity from the snow dusted summit of Mauna Kea, fern grottos, lava tubes, bamboo forests and volcanic craters of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park along with picture perfect Hapuna Beach. One side of the island has lava rock covered desert, another part has cattle ranches, and closer to Hilo has tropical rain forests. The locally produced agriculture there is divine. Best fruit and produce imaginable.
*My favorite island areas/archipelagos I've encountered off the mainland coast of the US
Puget Sound/San Juan Islands, WA:
- The San Juan Islands and villages like Friday Harbor and around Orcas Island offer uncommon bucolic rural charm with Pacific Northwest beauty in its surroundings. The mountain vistas, thick evergreen forests, and gorgeous rocky shores are remarkably beautiful. There are countless little islands that pop up everywhere from the sea and the ferry ride getting there is especially scenic. Honorable mention to Whidbey Island as well.
New England coastal islands:
-Nantucket Island has the nicest beaches I've seen anywhere in New England. The summer water temps are nice and Nantucket catches good surf/wave action. It's also absurdly expensive and a long ferry ride out. If you can afford Nantucket then it's best to fly in.
-Martha's Vineyard has lots of cool waterside towns and villages to explore and beautiful scenery with sea cliffs on the western side of the island.
-Block Island, RI is my favorite. It feels like Marthas Vineyard, just smaller and less crowded. There is a beach on the northern tip where waves crash on both sides of the sandbars, it's a fun place to swim. Block Island is perfect for biking and is well preserved in its natural state and there are a couple of cool historic lighthouses dotting the shoreline. It's such a beautiful island.
