I don't want to be the forum "downer" but how many of those "native american" individuals particularly east of the Mississippi River are truly Native Americans. I believe the actual percentage and totals would be much less.

Also, there are states east of the Mississippi with reservations. Just in Upstate NY, there's 6 and there are a couple of land claims. So, it may depend on what state/area.
Because that's what they prefer to be called. I had an anthropology professor in college who grew up on an indian reservation, and he explained that Native American, like African American, was a PC term created by Westerners, partially for marketing purposes. In reality, the native peoples of America generally prefer to call themselves American Indians.

There are about a dozen reservations in Wisconsin and they have a pretty large presense here. I'm not sure why you used the inaccurate "east of the Mississippi" qualifier, it's an unecessary tag to your point (which does have some validity throughout the country).
