Heard of both. To me I would probably see Twin Cities as more common
for Dallas it would be just Dallas or DFW before the metroplex but I would understand the reference if I heard it
for MSP to me the Twin Cities or MSP would seem like more common but that is just me
Yes. Unfortunately for Fort Worth, the term "Dallas" seems to be the go to for a lot of people. I even catch myself saying it. DFW or North Texas (I hate when people use North Texas) are probably used more than Metroplex these days, but if someone says Metroplex I think they would know it was referring to Dallas-Fort Worth though.
Good, come back in 2015 and flaunt that 7 million number. It's still a projection. Now maybe you can get back on the topic of which city's nickname has more recognition.
Everyone just needs to calm down, take a breath and count to 3. I was just making a statement about population projections.

To be honest, it's similar for the Twin Cities. People generally refer to the area as "Minneapolis" or "the Cities."
I've never heard anyone HATE this area being called "North Texas". Sure, it's not 100% geographically correct, but it's pretty much North Texas.
Even though it's in North Texas true and there is a university in the metro area, I still meet people from DFW say it's not North Texas. It's DFW and this and that.
Do people constantly mistake St. Paul as a suburb? Because that's not the image I get with that town.
St. Paul is never mistaken for a suburb as it doesn't resemble one at all, BUT Minneapolis is more recognizable and most understand that the Twin Cities MSA wouldn't be where it's at today if it weren't for Minneapolis. IMO, the same is true for the Dallas - Fort Worth MSA.
BTW, I'm moving three blocks east on August 1st and will officially become a St. Paulite.

It seems as though there is a curse on major cities with two word names that grow adjacent to other major cities with one word names. Maybe people just prefer to move to and recall the name of the one word city. Dallas-Fort Worth, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Tampa-St. Petersburg, and Miami- Fort Lauderdale have this problem. Or maybe it just focuses on cities with the words "Saint" and "Fort", because New York-Newark and San Francisco-Oakland don't have the problem.
