We all NY gets the reputation of the city that never sleeps. However I'm curious to know what cities have a lot of after hour activities besides NYC? These include.
Anything open after 11 PM
24 hour restaurants
24 hour grocery stores/super markets
24 hour diners or coffee shops
Transportation that runs beyond 12 AM
As I've moved to different states, I've come to realize that very few cities in America really are all that late night. I noticed that Seattle doesn't stay open that late. I had moved there from Atlanta, which had a lot more 24 hour options. I think around me, there was only a 24 hour Albertson's, a 24 hour CVS and a 24 hour QFC.
Philadelphia surprisingly isn't very 24 hours either. Unless you're in the heart of Center City, your 24 hour options are going to be limited. Downtown Philly shuts down pretty early, similar to downtown Atlanta which also shuts down very early.
Surprisingly I found Silicon Valley to be the most 24 hours compared to NYC. It has a few 24 hour buses that run through Santa Clara County and take you all the way up to the Peninsula. And you can even ride a bus to San Francisco for 24 hours, albeit it would take you hours and a ton of transfers. Outside of that, I think Santa Clara was the ONLY places where I found a 24 hour Starbucks, and there are 24 hour restaraunts up and down El Camino Real. When I moved to De Anza in Cupertino, there were 2 24 doughnut shops on that road. And there were a few 24 hour Safe Ways down Steven's Creek as well.
In my experience - Chicago, LA, SF, and maybe Miami and Las Vegas.
I am most familiar with Chicago for late night hours of out those though. Around where I live there is a 24 hour restaurant near me, two restaurant/bars open until 4am that serve food that late, a 24 hour convenience store (that has a good amount of food), a bunch of restaurants that are open until midnight, some more bars that serve food past midnight, and a handful of bars that are open until 4am/5am. Two of the train lines run 24/7 and all but one other runs until about 2am, and starts back up usually between 4am and 5am. A few bus routes run all night too with most of them starting back up between 4am - 6am.
Philadelphia has many bus routes that run 24 hours a day, PATCO High Speed Line runs 24/7, and now the subways run 24 hours a day on Fridays and Saturdays. There aren't many restaurants/food joints open 24/7 though, nor are there many stores besides CVS and similar kinds open 24/7. Though I can go to Pat's, only a couple blocks from my apartment, and get a cheesesteak at any hour of the day.
Just looking on Yelp at restaurants for places open after midnight, which is not accurate at ALL because some of these may also have bars that stop serving food before midnight. Some places, just bars, serve small menus too and may not even be on these lists. Yelp also does a crappy job of showing which places are still open for business too. And also a crappy job of listing correct hours - sometimes hours aren't even listed. But here we go:
Restaurants open after midnight on a Saturday
* Los Angeles: 1323
* Chicago: 1301
* Washington DC: 854
* Las Vegas: 611
* Phoenix: 583
* Boston: 562
* Seattle: 516
* Miami: 499
* San Diego: 499
* Minneapolis: 491
* Philadelphia: 482
* Atlanta: 477
* San Francisco: 473
* Portland, OR: 467
* Denver: 445
* Dallas: 378
* Detroit: 318
* Columbus, OH: 314
* Houston: 314
* Austin: 292
* Tampa: 267
* Baltimore: 261
* San Jose: 222
* Charlotte: 211
* Indianapolis: 202
* San Antonio: 191
* Honolulu: 188
* Nashville: 181
* New Orleans: 178
* Fort Worth: 141
* Memphis: 109
* Jacksonville: 96
* El Paso: 72

You have to be kidding me, the silicon valley has plenty of 24/7 options area/city but Philadelphia does not lol? Philadelphia is one of the most 24/7 cities in the US though I wouldn't say that it is the 2nd most 24/7 city in the US. Philadelphia has plenty of diners, super markets, restaurants and transportation options that are open 24/7.
