DCs relevance in business, which is what people actually care about, is well below SF.

Otoh, DC is increasing in aerospace and tech and finance tho, so thats good for them.

SF is still too much for them to compare tho.

Yeah, so need to try and deflect from the rankings just because SF is unquestionably ranked much higher than Philly 99% of the time.

It should come as no surprise tho. By virtually every measure aside from cheapness, SF drowns Philly in a tub.

All I can say is, I'm very satisfied with Miami's place.

not deflecting at all and not sure what Philly has to do with comments in the first place. I would add a lower % of douchebaggery as well to cheapness though, but that is my opinion don't think that was category

Douchbaggery is no more insufferable than Windbaggery.

as Bill Cosby once said when talking about cocaine. He said they tell me it intensifies your personality - so he pondered and asked but what if you are an a hole - interesting premise

This focus on the “necessary” city led
to what will no doubt be a
controversial result: a 10th place
ranking for the San Francisco Bay
Area, on the strength of its central role
in the tech industry, tied on our list
with Los Angeles and Toronto. The
Bay Area did not even make the top 20
in the 2014 A.T. Kearney rankings,
which placed both Chicago and Los
Angeles in the top 10.

Not long ago Los Angeles, North
America’s second-largest metro area,
saw itself as a potential rival to New
York and a legitimate world city.
Hollywood is nearly synonymous with
the American entertainment industry
and is by far the world’s largest in
terms of revenue and influence. Last
year the industry enjoyed exports of
almost $15 billion.

But L.A.’s share of entertainment
employment is shrinking and its
former second industry, aerospace,
has declined significantly, losing over
90,000 jobs since the end of the Cold
War. Several key companies have
decamped from the metro area in
recent years — Nissan, Occidental
Petroleum, Toyota — for more
business-friendly places.

The situation is arguably worse in
Chicago, which ties for 20th. The
Windy City first rose to world
prominence after overcoming rival St.
Louis in the late 19th century. It
boasts one of the world’s most diverse
economies, but has not developed
strong dominance in any industry.
Chicago is an also ran in media and
technology and, outside of
commodities, is no longer a major
global financial center.

The big winner today is the Bay Area,
which overwhelmingly dominates the
list of technology leaders; not only is
the metro area home to a glittering
array of tech standouts, companies
based elsewhere in the U.S., and in
other countries, feel compelled to site
operations there. Even a penny
pinching retailer like Wal-Mart is
growing its Silicon Valley presence.

Houston like SF, is actually "necessary" for the US to maintain its competitive edge over the rest of the world.

In North America up and comers
include No. 14 Houston, with its
domination of the U.S. energy
industry, a huge export sector and an
increasingly diverse population...
Why stop there?

The Washington, D.C., metro area ranks 16th, a testament to the capital’s growth as an aerospace and technology center.
Cox, Kotkin, and company went out of their way to note Washington under their "rising stars" segment. Yes, San Francisco, Houston, and also Dallas have been really impressive over the years. Washington hasn't been a slouch either, in fact, it's surge in relevance coincides with the other three.

The evidence is in the 2008-2014 statistical trends. We're even.

The claim was that Atlanta was an outlier in terms of education levels, but you posted numbers indicate otherwise. It seems to be an also-ran. And you conveniently cut out the metros with highest % bachelors degrees.

But I don't even get what you're posting. Obviously % Associates Degrees doesn't measure a highly educated workforce, and even % Bachelors degree is a very weak metric. You would, at a minimum, want to do % Masters+ or % Nationally ranked universities or something.

Generally speaking, the outliers in terms of education levels overall would be Boston, DC, Bay Area. If you want to look at elite-level education levels, NYC and the previous three. I have never heard of Atlanta as some mecca for educated types, and I don't believe its an outlier, at all, in this respect. It appears to be a slight laggard.
I'm starting to think your personal view of Atlanta is playing into your view of Atlanta as global city and one of the most important in the nation. Atlanta's position as the unofficial crown city of the Southeast is similar to that of Chicago and Boston in their regions. This is one thing to consider. Also in addition to the CDC which helps in a global scale for medical practice and public health (think the current e bola outbreak) Atlanta is also the HQ of Equifax. This is one of the big three credit agencies. This not only plays into GDP but also perceived influence concerning consumer credit. This also adds weight the sphere of influence. Atlanta has also become an entertainment capital (not much for my taste but significant to note anyway) which also adds to its perception.

As far as education goes I think you underestimate the HBCUs. Additionally there is nearby UGA which lumped with Emory and GaTech and I do believe there is a strong case for Atlanta as a strong educational capital. If not nationally then definitely being a draw for Southeast (which I do admit has fierce competition from Nashville and the Triangle but many do prefer a larger city).
