NYC does have more influence, but California(LA, San Francisco, San Diego, Orange County, Santa Barbara, Napa Valley, etc.) as a state, offers much more than new york state.

I said NYC because NYC has rich history and is the biggest city in America! That tells you that it has a big influence on this Nation. America is proud to have NYC "that I know of".
This thread looks like a tiresome long battle without any clear winner. Both cities are extremely influential. In terms of pop culture, I'd go towards Los Angeles because of Hollywood.
Forget the ny times, my pops went to la and he said they were selling the ny post, a daily newspaper here in new york, at a news stand. Thats influence
