NYC does have more influence, but California(LA, San Francisco, San Diego, Orange County, Santa Barbara, Napa Valley, etc.) as a state, offers much more than new york state.

I said NYC because NYC has rich history and is the biggest city in America! That tells you that it has a big influence on this Nation. America is proud to have NYC "that I know of".

This thread looks like a tiresome long battle without any clear winner. Both cities are extremely influential. In terms of pop culture, I'd go towards Los Angeles because of Hollywood.
