A crude way to gauge how much your city is known among people outside the USA. Obviously there are certain cities much more known to the rest of the world than we would expect.

For example, cities like Philadelphia while famous inside the USA are relatively unheard of in the rest of the world by my experience.

Philly made the list tho, I was surprised not to see my favorite place to visit not on it (New Orleans).

I love New Orleans but on an international scale it's presence is surprisingly unknown. Not like Las Vegas which I always felt was a shame since NoLa to me is way more fun than Las Vegas. When I went to New Orleans, besides cruise ships, I noticed most of the tourists were simply US citizens.

Looks to me like Miami, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Honolulu and Tampa punch above their weight in terms of international tourism, and Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Dallas punch below their weight.

I couldn't tell from the article but do any of these cities make this list because they are international points of entry? How loose is the definition of tourism applied?

My guess is this list would look at least a little different if it only included leisure travel and not business+leisure.

If it was simply based on people entering the country then San Diego would by far and away be #1 considering how many people cross the border daily. So I assume there has to be some sort of leisure/vacation aspect to these numbers.

In such cases, San Jose (Silicon Valley) will almost surely fall off. I can't imagine anyone visiting that city for leisure, instead mostly business types for conferences. I'm sure on an international scale, you say San Jose, they think Costa Rica. I did so until I went to University.

Washington, DC would probably be a lot lower, I bet people come to see the city but it probably punches above its weight with a bunch of diplomats, politicians, and analysts constantly flying in and out.

I think that cities like Orlando (DisneyWorld), Anaheim (DisneyLand), Honolulu, and Flagstaff (Grand Canyon) are probably the purest leisure travelers. I can't imagine much business travel to those cities.
