I don't think any Southern city could be an equivalent to Pittsburgh. Maybe Birmingham with the industry but Pittsburgh is nothing but a Northern city despite what some may try to say here.
Pittsburgh has a bit of the counter culture vibe that Austin has lots of. Austin has a bit of the urbanity that Pittsburgh has lots of.
Looking at the landscape and architecture Birmingham has got to be the most similar...struck me as a northern industrial town the first time I visited Bham and still every time since.
Jacksonville has a ton of Pittsburgh transplants, although I've always gotten the sense that there are a lot of them throughout the south. But yeah, we have a bad case of Pittsburgh-itis in these parts. Probably more people claim to be from there than are actually from there.
Pittsburgh has no Southern equivalent. Birmingham is merely the Southern terminus of Appalachia. To be technical, Charleston, WV is a Southern city and from my experience, is the most like Pittsburgh.

People are mentioning Birmingham because of the prominent role the steel industry historically played there, thus earning it the nickname "the Pittsburgh of the South." It was worth a mention.
I can tell you the Midwestern city with a Southern twist that is the closest to Pittsburgh has to be St. Louis. Cleveland, Buffalo, and Baltimore are similar. Although none of those are in the south. Charleston, WV would probably be next after those four. The people seem similar in some respects. The city so-so.
