To me what is interesting about this thread so far is the disconnect between what people who post say and the actual vote. If you only read the post without looking at the poll results it would seem to be a dead heat or perhaps even a slight advantage favoring Houston, but the vote appears to be going hands down in Dallas's favor. I guess all the lurkers prefer Dallas almost unanimously

BTW at the time of this post the poll results were 12-22-9

Dallas and it ain't even close. The Dallas Cowboys alone, say what you want (and I live near Philadelphia lol), put Dallas on the recognition/reputation map to a degree Houston can't match in anything, even outside sports. Dallas Cowboys > every Houston sports team, probably combined. Dallas Cowboys > NASA. Dallas Cowboys > Texas Medical Center. You get the idea. Sad as it is, we live in a vapid, money obsessed society that glorifies sports and the superficial. Well, Dallas clearly has the edge here, no?

And I know notoriety and recognition are not the same as reputation, but it's hard to ask non-Texans to argue on reputation when no one knows as much about Houston, compared to Dallas. Might as well be Phoenix, Arizona to us on the East Coast, honestly. Texas is Texas to anyone not there anyway, so Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, etc. align way more under that "Texas" umbrella for reputation to non-locals, imo.

For African Americans, it's Houston by a long shot.

For general stuff, I think it's Dallas.

In Louisiana, it's definitely Houston.

I think both Dallas and Houston have worse national reputations than they deserve, but I think Dallas's is slightly worse. What is Dallas known for: The JFK assassination, the trashy eponymous tv show, a football team that is actually in Arlington? Houston, at least has the medical center and NASA. Reputations don't necessarily accord with reality. Nationally, I would say that both Austin and San Antonio have better reputations than Houston or Dallas, particularly amongst coastal opinion makers, even though they are by many metrics lesser cities.

I'm currently in Dallas on business, Garland, TX to be exact. IMHO both metros have about the same reputation and prestige. Many people are moving to Houston and Dallas for a lower cost of living and a promise of stable employment. I personally prefer Houston over Dallas due to its diversity and proximity to the Gulf Coast.

Houston has no pizazz, when you hear the name of some cities, it is accompanied by a certain wow factor, like Las Vegas, ahhhhh New Orleans, ahhhhh Paris woooooow, you probably would get the same reaction to Houston as you would Cincinnati, or Oklahoma city. It's just perception Houston is no doubt a great City, but it doesn't market itself very well, to be the 4th largest city I hear surprising little about Houston outside of City Data

Houston more diverse, but Dallas (and Garland) are also very diverse.

Both probably have ****ty reputation due to the fact that they're associated with Texas which has a very bad reputation. I would say for blacks, Houston comes out looking better than Dallas by a significant margin.

I don't think people realize how much of a commodity Houston is considered among the AA community within the country.

The funny thing about this though as I think the DFW black population will pass Houston black population by the 2020 census. But still, Houston will remain the more popular spot for Black folks.

I've lived most of my life in the Northeast, a little bit in the Midwest, and no kidding, I have never met anyone with a positive impression of Houston. I started noticing this a long time ago, so now anytime I encounter anyone with a connection to Houston, I ask them what they think of it. I get a negative answer every time. I'm not trying to make any judgments here -- I've never been the Houston (despite having been to Texas a bunch of times). It's just something I've witnessed. So I'd definitely say Dallas by default.
