How Would You Rank the 5 Major Northeastern Cities in Order from Most Important to Least Important? (better, highest)

Actually was curious and looked at the commuter inward numbers to Mercer


58K (27% of Mercer jobs) coummute from the Philly MSA to Mercer county for work and 44K commute from NYC MSA counties to Mercer

a lot of movement in and out accros these three MSAs in terms of communting overall

so a weird dynamic for the Trenton MSA and work/commuter patterns

50% of people that work in the metro come from another MSA (probably no metro even close here)
45% of residents that live in the Trenton metro commute to another MSA for work (again would guess no metro is even close)

it also means that both the NYC and Philly MSAs send more commuters to Mercer county then they recieve from Mercer county

You can't possibly be serious putting the nation's capital at #5. NYC at #1, DC at #2, and Baltimore at #5 in the northeast megalopolis are basically givens. Boston and Philly are interchangeable at #3 and #4 they're the only ones really up for dispute

the NJ job centers (close to Mercer) are the draw and the connection but its not Manhattan driving this

and in terms of development the connection with Philly is seemless and broad - the mercer connection with the NYC MSA is significantly less developed actually

Trenton to Philly is 11 miles, Trenton to NYC is probably 45 at the closest point which is Staten Island

now the CSA connection is what it is (actually may even meet MSA today) but the developed connection is not the same and on the NOLA they were also all incorrect as well.

as recently as 1995 Mercer had 18% of their workers commuting to Bucks county PA but with two large closures those numbers dropped and changed dramtically causing the movement from the Philly MSA county to the NYC CSA county

never disputed more from Mercer to NY MSA countiues than Philly MSA counties, but is actually close and the difference between actual NYC and actual Philly is 4K people (not a driver of either way)

Yes they pretty close and the majority of commuters from Mercer to NY MSA counties commute less than 10 miles, not heading into Manhattan. NYC itself is not even close to the driver here

and the NYC MSA sends more commuters to Mercer than it recives, as does the Philly MSA

my point is more that the commuter pattern is very dynamic for Mercer and the not even close is not an accurate statement for the dynamic

in fact just removing one job center that is directly bordering Mercer or if the Mercer county line incldued Heightstown the CSA would be with Philly and not NYC (both qualify actually). It just shows the ficklenes of the connections in areas with very dynamic commuter patterns. Mercer county is the excpetion rather the rule when it comes to this given its geogrpahic location

Mercer is an oddball with patterns really more than anything and doesnt perfectly fit the NYC or Phiilly area, a grey area of both really in the space between the two metros. The county itself is split by things as simple as sports rooting allegiances with the Southern portion leaning Philly fans and the Northern portion leaning NY sports fans

I'd say Pittsburgh and Baltimore are debatable at number 5. Surely, Pittsburgh is more attractive currently, and leads Baltimore in any number of "importance" criteria...

If that number continues to grow, Bucks County will be in the NYC CSA before long!
