I'm from Philly originally. Unless things have changed, Center City is a neighborhood name (like the Loop.) But people clearly distinguish whether they live in "the city" (meaning urban Philadelphia) versus the Philly area (mostly burbs) to the extent that people living in Philly often get touch about people not in the city saying they are from there. Particularly people from the Main Line who self identify as from Philly. It is all a bit silly IMO.

Center City Philly is a few neighborhoods. The Loop in Chicago is ONE neighborhood itself.

CC or Center City Philly has Fitler Square, Rittenhouse Square, Society Hill, Old City and -- I have no idea what neighborhood the whole Northwest part of CC is called.

Center City Philadelphia by street-view

Goggle street-view recognizes a Downtown Chicago as the Loop to the Lakefront and New East Side.

Chicago's Loop is it alone as its own neighborhood. The CBD has other neighborhoods too, with some only in part the city officially gives a border of.

Chicago Central Business District -- as defined by the city with the neighborhoods of the Loop, a 1/4 of the Near West Side, the New East Side, Streeterville, River North and a 1/4 at best of the Gold Coast.

So the term downtown depending on the city can differ from the CBD even officially recognized by that City vs Google street-view.... for Philly street-view does not recognize a downtown. But does the term Center City.

Yep. The main point with my two numbers is list the CBD population and alsoto try and encompass urban city living areas... given the majority of the densely populated parts of the core of Chicago are not in the CBD... but are contiguous with it. Sort of like how Brooklyn is urban and central, but in the case of Chicago, the river does not divide in the East that that it does with Manhatten.

If you go back 20 years, almost no one lived in the CBD, and all of the urban residential density was in that extend area to the north

This video gives a great view of Toronto's downtown residential tower density. Most of the buildings other than the big cluster of bank towers in the financial district are residential.

Center City, with its many neighborhoods, amounts to 2.07 square miles altogether and the Loop is 1.58 square miles. The difference isn't huge. Taking a portion of Streeterville and River North such as everything south of Grand Avenue will get you an equivalent area.
