Richmond occupies a lower tier, but punches way above its weight.

I agree. Richmond is in a lower tier (full tier down), but deserves some credit where it counts. Pittsburgh is not the best comparison, however.

LOL okay. I guess people are more easily offended than I am. I'm very tolerant of people around me and I realize some folks have different beliefs than mine. I wouldn't be anymore offended than if someone asked if I had found a good grocery store yet. But whatever floats your boat.

When did Pittsburgh become a major city?

The population is 300K. San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, and Denver all have have suburbs with more people than Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is the 63 most populated city in the USA it's metro is also the 26th largest in the USA. By what measures is it a "major city"? It's a decent sized city but it is by no means major.

Its about the same size as it was in the 1960s when it was the 8th largest (2.4 million MSA, 1.8 million UA). Just because other cities have caught up to near and slightly larger populations doesn't dimish the fact that it's an important city.

FIW, claiming Pittsburgh's small city limits as a reason it's not important is like saying San Antonio, Charlotte, and Jacksonville are more important than Boston because they have larger city populations and they are growing faster.

I'm assuming they're talking about influence and amenities offered, which if that's the case it is a lot closer to a Denver than another city around 300k. As far as that goes Richmond offers more than its population would suggest as well.
