Yes its expensive, but how can anyone argue against NYC?

I would also vote Philadelphia because it has almost all the amenities NYC has, but more affordable. Plus you are in a central location.

I chose Chicago. I lived there on my mid 20's. Here are some of the reasons why?
You get to experience one of the coolest cities period.
You get to experience the heat of the summer and the extreme cold. Coming from a very hot city, the cold was "cool" for me at that time
Plenty of parties and the girls are pretty approachable
Cheap flights to other amazing cities
Plenty of job opportunities
Great universities. U chicago, Depaul, Northwstern( next door)
I just love the vibe of that city

I think NYC is a great choice because it offers such a unique experience among American cities, but the rest make a fine choice as well.

I don't know enough about every city to make a completely informed rankings, but my "20s rankings" would go something like:

1) NYC
2-3) tie - DC/Chicago
4) SF
5) Miami
6) Austin
7-whatever) the rest

Philadelphia is consistently ranked as a great city for young people.

It is a great city - and pretty underrated IMO. It's a city of 1.5 million, very walkable city in areas, and a lot going on. Maybe not as much as Chicago, but still enough to be a really good option - both of those cities are great options and a great deal relatively.

I think any city over 2 million in its metro, with a few exceptions, will offer plenty for young professionals. There are also some good options in the 1-2 million range like New Orleans and Louisville. Of course the best places to spend your twenties is either in one of the top cities like NYC or Chicago or one of the hipster hotspots like Portland, Seattle, Austin, Denver, etc, but not everybody can live in those places and there are alternatives.

Most twentysomethings should avoid rural America and cities that are very family oriented.

Chicago is currently where I'm spending my 20s. Chicago's lifestyle is great, and being car free is easy, but the trouble is that it spoils you. I'd need to be making far more money to even consider living in NYC at this point because I live alone in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Chicago, and the thought of having a roommate again is just awful as far as I'm concerned.
