I too that that NYC was #1 based on my experiences growing up, but this makes sense based on a story one my coworkers from Chicago told me. He mentioned he had a boyfriend that was allergic to something in his building that the could never figure out. Turns out it was the rats in the walls.

I'll say I've lived in Pittsburgh for 12 years now, and have yet to see a rat anywhere.

Of course, I don't hang out in warehouses at night, but still, seeing rats on the street was a normal thing when I went to NYC when I was younger. I even saw a few in DC. None here.

I agree with this, but this ranking also has Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta ranked above more urban and dense cities.

Having lived in both SF and Seattle, I found the rat problem to be worse in Seattle. But everyone's experience is different.

The worst I've seen is Philadelphia. Chicago is probably second. Chicago posts these hilarious looking warning posters that read "TARGET: RATS."

I saw a rat the size of a small rat in D.C.'s gallery place

Also in Chicago I saw one downtown in alley behind Wacker street.

I assume the rivers in both the cities' are partially to blame along with the trash that people/restaurants leave behind.

Maybe they're talking about rats per capita compared to human population. Just a guess, but on. a related note , The Discovery Channel will be airing something about rats in NYC this Sunday.

I agree. Wonder if it's terrain driven? Shocked to not see a Texas city.

Live in DC. Haven't seen one yet. Thank God.

There aren't really many mixed use structurally dense cities in America so once you get past NYC, CHI, DC, BOS, PHI, SF, LA, and BAL, there isn't much of a difference. These are the densest cities structurally in America. After that group of cities, there isn't much of a difference. They also have the highest population densities in the nation outside of Baltimore which is built like them, but has a lot of vacant houses.
