I believe it's sitting at 4. Which isn't all that high considering the city's reputation (it's actually fairly comparable to the national average as far as homicides go). What hurts Waterloo the most are rape and burglary (both of which are over twice the national average).

KCCI reports it as 22 homicides for the year. Not sure if that's a typo, or referring to the "suicide by cop" incident a couple of months ago.
It's referring to the suicide by cop incident last month. I don't know why they counted it this time though considering that in the previous two homicide news stories they referred to them as the city's 19th and 20th.
Like I said in a previous post, this summer could've of gone a lot worse for Des Moines.
Let's just hope this is not a trend and just a few rough years like Cedar Rapids had. I mean it was only 6 or 7 years ago when our city had its lowest murder rate possibly ever.

According to this news clip four minutes in, during the summer of violence in 1993 that prompted the state to have a special session at this point in 1995, Denver had 55 homicides in the middle of September that year. So, the levels of violence are approaching levels of the early 1990s.
Denver had 32 total homicides in 2000 and 33 homicides in 2010.
A man was set on fire on Friday in Des Moines' Northeast Side has passed away.
I guess one thing to keep in mind is that I think in 1992 there were 23 homicides and the next year there were 8, so it's not unlucky that next year could be much better. Still though, this year had been extremely troubling. Even more so is the low clearance rate for homicides, I don't even think half the homicides this year have had arrests. Same as last year(which had far fewer homicides but had a low cleareance rate), I wouldn't be suprised if many of the unsolved homicides last year have connections to unsolved ones this year.
Denver has also had a significant violent crime rate increase this year. Interesting, how before the massive gentrification and economic boom started in 2010 in the middle of the great recession it only had 33 homicides. They had 32 homicides in 2000.
As the city gets wealthier and wealthier it seems like violent crime rates go up and up!
Wichita, KS is up to 23 homicides this year. They have a population of 390,000 people.
Omaha is still at 17 homicides. Last homicide in Omaha was on July 25th. They went from January 26th to March 22nd without a homicide this year so they have a had some long-stretches without a homicide.
Omaha has 450,000 people.
Lincoln is still at zero with 280,000 people. They have also had double digit decreases in aggrevated assaults and robberies.
As of the 19th of August, Atlanta is at 51 murders. Last year it was at 73 murders so down 30% YTD. Was hoping Atlanta would land under 70 this year, but that seems unlikely. Guess under 80 will be a new goal lol.
