SC offers significantly more than AR. I'm not sure how one can casually dismiss the coast as a one off; It's a significant draw to SC and part of the state culture. There is more of a balance of cities throughout the state in SC as well, IMO.
Charlotte is another Sunbelt Suburban city, smaller Atlanta, so being close to both won't do much for me personally; on the other hand, there's various differences between Memphis and Dallas.
I've heard a lot of criticisms of Myrtle Beach, but this is the first I'm hearing that it has nothing to do.
We walked the boardwalk or whatever and there was maybe two restaurants and one arcade. There were lots of day activities to do but nothing as far as nightlife. Locals pointed us to this mall that had a couple places but we left there too. It seems extremely small too.

Are you referring just to Myrtle Beach proper or the whole Grand Strand? This may be the reason for some of the confusion, as some people may refer to the whole Grand Strand as just "Myrtle Beach". Places like Atlantic Beach and North Myrtle Beach, among others, are a part of the greater area.

Nightlife isn't exactly huge and MB isn't a metropolis, but there are tons of activities and things to do. That's especially true for families and avid golfers.

I know that we were in North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach itself.

Yeah it seems much more of a family place than a debauchery place.
I really hope you didn't expect it to be like a mini-New Orleans. It's nothing like that whatsoever, which probably explains your disappointment.
I had no expectations but I thought there would be at least bars. More like Destin and that area.
