For a long time, we've heard some people say, "The Coasts have a superiority complex" or "The Midwest has a inferiority complex." So, which region has the bigger complex, or is it about the same?
The coasts outside of the major cities have no complex to speak of. A few people from a few midwestern cities might have an inferiority complex, but the vast majority just don't care.
I think as City Data forum members we assume people care about a bunch of stuff when in reality they've never thought of it.
bjimmy24 is mostly correct. I've NEVER heard anyone in the Midwest speak of an inferiority complex, or that they felt less than. They might admire another Midwest city more than their own, but most are where they are, because they want to be there.
It appears that the East Coast has the biggest complex
The west coast doesn't seem to care about it superiority
The midwest and the south doesn't seem think that superior to any other region, in fact, those two regions display the most humility.
The east coast.... has a complex inside of a complex, showing symptoms of disorder.
I'm sure the average Midwesterner would scoff at the idea, and point out Midwest advantages. But people tend to be jealous of economic development, economic recovery, etc. Just like coastal people tend to be jealous of housing prices unless they own already.
There is a large degree of provincialism in both the Midwest and the coasts, but more so on the coasts IMO at least as it relates to "flyover country".

What do you mean by "a large degree of provincialism in both the Midwest and the Coasts"?

Provincialism is defined as:
"concern for one's own area or region at the expense of national or supranational unity"
Many cities are afflicted by this. It's the sort of "I live in the center of the universe" type mentality. For example, when people refer to the interior US as "flyover country" they are exhibiting provincialism.
