Coke and alcohol use were apparently based on national averages.
DC claimed the top spot by having a slightly higher rate of cannabis consumption. This was a ridiculous list.
What is more interesting in this list is the number of nightlife venues per 100,000 people:
Miami - 532 per 100,000
DC - 240 per 100,000
San Francisco - 237 per 100,000
Seattle - 223 per 100,000
Denver - 220 per 100,000
Boston - 199 per 100,000
Chicago - 169 per 100,000
Dallas - 139 per 100,000
Philadelphia - 133 per 100,000
NYC - 115 per 100,000
Houston - 114 per 100,000
Los Angeles - 103 per 100,000
Phoenix - 94 per 100,000
Of course, more compact cities show a higher concentration per 100,000. In this list, DC has the second highest concentration.
Funny they mention Denver’s Octoberfest which is pretty tame but neglected to mention Great American Beer Festival week which is the biggest party this city throws (maybe outside of the 420 Festival nowadays).

Something about these numbers seems way off. 532 per 100,000 in the CITY of Miami? I highly doubt Miami proper has over 3,000 venues, as there really isn't much in terms of nightlife there, and it is VERY small. If they're including South Beach, perhaps, but then again, which population figure are they using? City of Miami (600,000) or Miami MSA, which includes South Beach, but also West Palm, etc. (6,000,000 people?)
Either way, that number makes no sense: 532 per 100,000 means there are over 30,000 nightlife venues in the Miami MSA.
Something tells me they used the relatively low City of Miami population figure and included all of the venues in neighboring South Beach to achieve that number.

For Miami, that translates to 2,465 nightlife venues (assuming they used 2017 population estimate)
For DC, that translates to 1,666 nightlife venues (assuming they used 2017 population estimate)
For Philadelphia, that translates to 2,103 nightlife venues (assuming they used 2017 population estimate)
I can't tell what their definition of "nightlife venue" really means (nightclub only, tavern, bar, restaurant that turns into a bar or nightclub at night, or combination of those). I am suspicious of any ranking that doesn't show methodology. Methodology is very important.
Also, it is not obvious whether they're using city limits, metro area, or a hybrid.

Yes, I know it's per capita, which is how I came up with roughly 3,000 venues in the city proper, and/or 30,000 in the MSA.
I agree with you: What is "nightlife?" Is the restaurant/steakhouse with a full bar on the first floor of the office tower I work in "nightlife?" It's open until 2AM every day.
lol. What a ridiculous list. And apparently 2.3% of everyone uses cocaine. Hilarious.
The idea that 2.3% of those who use a substance - including alcohol - do cocaine at least once annually seems believable.
