Some years back, it was "UCD" and "UCCS" (not mentioned in this link). Then CU paid a sh*t-ton of money to rebrand itself. This was sometime around 2006 or 2007.
CUD...not going to help with the cowtown thing, which should be fading into distant memory...

I'm not sure how recent the ostensible "rebranding" is. We were calling UIUC both the U of I and Illinois as far back as when I was looking to go there as an undergraduate. As a graduate student at Wisconsin, we were definitely calling it, well, Wisconsin as well as UW-Madison. I'm not sure if the lateral shift, if there were one, were calculated.
