This thread is kind of pointless. The two states have no points of comparison. Totally different climate. Totally different topography. Maine has no cities. It’s the whitest state in the country. My sister’s first college roommate in the 1970s in Boston came from Wells, Maine. She’d never seen a black person other than on television. Ethnic is French-Canadian.

If I had to chose, Portland ME ranks higher than any city in FL for the opportunity, natural environment, quality of life and wages to COL index.

So Portland ME over anywhere in FL... but if you threw me up in Caribou or Bangor, I might go to Tampa.

I have friends in Portland. Jobs are extremely hard to come by there, the market is basically stagnant. So the claim that Portland offers more opportunity than any city in Florida in not only untrue, it's a preposterous and dishonest claim to make. Some people actually use this site for accurate information.

Not sure I could handle Maine, as it's dangerously close to Boston. Though it does look pretty up there.

Florida isn't the worst, if you are high enough income to where you can be near the beach and be near jobs at the same time. However a lot of Florida is only the former with plenty of beach and no jobs. Or if you're inland, neither. I need a job to pay for that coastal living...

This. Main is actually struggling because of their aging population and not enough workers, so the economy is being effected.

Now way Portland Maine offers more opportunity than a place like Miami or even Orlando. There's just no way.

Maine and it's not even close.

Maine has 4 gorgeous seasons, a lot of charming towns and varied geography. Mountains, rocky coastline, northwoods forest and lakes.

Seriously, you couldn't pay me enough to live in Florida.

Maine is on my radar as a retirement possibility.

That is the ignorance of so many people on city-data when it comes to Florida. Or maybe they just don’t like Florida for personal reasons. Biases aside, Florida clearly wins in most categories when compared to Maine. It’s fact not opinion. Florida offers a variety of highly populated metro areas each with their own identities and urban infrastructure. Florida has more outdoor activities, more jobs/bigger economy. Florida has a much larger influence than Maine. Florida is a racial and cultural melting pot that is almost 50/50 liberal/conservative, anyone can find their niche in FL. Maine wins for mountain/winter activities (although nothing compared to Colorado or Utah) and it has New England charm but that’s it. It’s not even a fair comparison, to be honest.
