Does any other city have significant white immigrant groups though? Boston Providence and Boston have large Brazilian and Portuguese populations which one sometimes is considered white and the other is white.

Probably not, maybe NY? Philly? Boston’s “white” population is diverse within itself yes.

you bring up an interesting point, are these "white" populations including all white people, or only the "non-Hispanic white" people?

Middle Eastern is also considered white. Places like NYC, LA, Chicago, etc have big populations of that. There's also a lot of European born people in the NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, etc areas.

I'm doing some suburbs calculations and the numbers appear to be non Hispanic white. Also FYI, Middle Eastern and North African people are considered white by the Census. Of course, these areas are a lot more diverse than people realize, but there's definitely people in many cities that the common person wouldn't think of as "white" but the Census deems them as such.

Here are populations in 2018 of people born in the Middle East and North Africa who are considered white by the Census. This isn't counting any of their kids who might have been born in the US:

1. NYC MSA: 216,699 people
2. Los Angeles MSA: 188,164 people
3. Detroit MSA: 113,603 people
4. DC MSA: 61,166 people
5. Chicago MSA: 60,796 people
6. Houston: 55,608 people
7. San Diego MSA: 41,553 people
8. Boston MSA: 37,738 people
9. Dallas MSA: 36,961 people
10. San Francisco MSA: 34,671 people
11. Miami MSA: 29,760 people
12. Philadelphia MSA: 29,490 people
13. Atlanta MSA: 22,568 people
14. Seattle MSA: 21,604 people
15. Phoenix MSA: 21,037 people

DC also by MSA has the 4th largest Asian population in the United States, with a chance to be 3rd by 2020. The Asian population now 10% of the metro, will also crack 1 million mark by 2030.

There are 8 metro areas in the country that hold at least 1 million residents in three of the four racial groups:

New York
Los Angeles
Chicago
Dallas
Houston
Washington DC
Miami
San Francisco/Oakland
I’m assuming you think DC made up the 17,000 difference between it and Chicago? Because Chicago does slightly have more to rank 4 going by this list. Or were you going by percentage.

On another note, is this the first estimate where the Hispanic population being the larger group than the white population in Houston? Interesting how close the Asian and Black population are between DFW and Houston.

Sorry just making, sure I read things right before posting:

Washington DC/Arlington/Alexandria MSA:

Black - 24.7% - 1,542,671

Chicago/Naperville/Elgin MSA:

Black - 16.0% - 1,521,747

This certainly happened within the last two years, mostly attributed to Chicago’s MSA posting a black population decline over that time frame.

Edit:
Oh I realized you might be referring to the Asian population difference, in which that case DC is about 16/17k behind Chicago MSA as of the date these stats came out. Just based on growth patterns I think there’s a chance the DC MSA could post the 3rd highest numerical Asian population in the nation by 2020 Census, unless Chicago does enough to hold things off by a couple more years. Most Americans would not guess that DC ranks that high with Asians, albeit this is with SF and SJ split, combined the Bay is 3rd in the US.

So your going to double in 2 years? That would be something.

2018 Asian Population
SF MSA 1,245,153
SJ MSA 719,268
DC MSA 624,640

No you’re absolutely correct. I was just looking at the numbers again. San Jose is larger with Asians than DC MSA. And I was saying 3rd spot while meaning 4th.

So the race is for 5th. Chicago and DC (possibly Houston) will probably duke it out for the 5 spot with Asians, as I don’t see the Bay metros relinquishing those spots.

Ok now I understand

Yeah you never know. DC or Houston I think are best positioned to have 1M+ in all 4 groups at this point. That's very cool.

To me the most interesting local caveat is indeed in the Asian boom and how they are eclipsing Whites, now the case in the Bay Area's 2 largest counties.

Anyhow, to illustrate just how visible Asians have become here, I compiled data for the SF-Oakland and SJ Urban Areas combined:

2018 SF-Oakland & SJ Urban Areas:
Total Pop: 5,370,517 Total Area: 809 sq miles.
33.6% White 1,809,153
32.2% Asian 1,732,444

22.9% Hispanic 1,230,676
5.7% Black 310,721
4.1% Two or More Races 223,825

Talk about close...

Within the next couple of years, Asians will surpass Whites as the largest group in the Urban Core of the Bay Area-it just goes to show that demographic predictions can change like the wind. 20 years ago it was predicted that by today, every CA county would be majority Hispanic except SF proper--that never happened and doesnt look like it will happen.
