"Whether on foot, horseback or on patrol, a large contingent of police officers made their presence known in the Gold Coast Wednesday.
The officers tried to allay the fears of a neighborhood still shaken up following a brazen daytime shooting that left one man dead and his two companions injured in Chicago's most upscale shopping district.
'This was an individual who fancies himself as a rapper, but is also a member of a gang, there's been an ongoing conflict between his gang and another, he was live streaming his travels through the city and he was found,' Mayor Lori Lightfoot said.
Identified as 26-year-old Carlton Weekly, but more commonly known by the name FBG Duck, the rapper was gunned down on Oak Street just west of Michigan Avenue by four men who police said jumped out of two separate vehicles and started shooting just before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Between July 1 to July 28 there were 160 violent crimes on Chicago's Near North Side which encompasses the Gold Coast, Streeterville, River North and Old Town, according to police."
(Oh how they conveniently left out Cabrini Green, although a shell of its dark days, the rowhouses are still there. There was even a fatal shooting there just recently.)
In reference to the last portion, there were 812 total violent crimes, of that 5 criminal homicides, 106 rapes/sexual assaults, 383 robberies, 317 Assaults/Batteries, and 1 human trafficking (taken from CPD website) in 2018. For a population of 90,000 (2018 estimates), that's a rate of 902 per 100k. This community has a highly transient population, but still uncomfortably high for an area with a median income of $100k. This wouldn't be tolerated in the equivalent suburban district. Not unique to Chicago, as there exist a double standard between city and suburbs everywhere else at least in the US.

Was near the intersection of Dearborn/Division couple years ago...shoot out took place between a dude on the street and a vehicle...driver shot. Out of nowhere and in an instant, gunshots in the allegedly high end Gold Coast.
Now this rapper killed on Oak Street in broad daylight.
Why bring up cities outside of Boston. They literally don’t put up ANY numbers. The 6-7 “bad” cities you guys always bring up have almost zero violence issues. The numbers are right on this website at least look before you mention them
Im not even trolling guys. Boston has barely any homicides in comparison. And it’s bad cities homicides are non existent and shootings rare
While not the south level, MA has some rough cities like Brockton
Boston with its demographics and poverty levels compared to similar cities should average 80-120 a year but the city isnt at all active like that
I mean the highest the city ever had was like 150 during the crack epidemic which isnt even a high record. Cities today in 2020 are easily hitting that.
Boston overall is just a really safe city. I predict within 5-10 years with more gentrification it will max out in tbe 20-30’s for here on out
Well, I never felt unsafe in Boston even at night... When I lived in Brockton, I had some concerns at time but nothing crazy.
You need to understand the demograpgics, most people will only see the black people thus think it will be violent...
Boston (the New England region) has a very large immigrat population and those people do way less crime than American born people... In Bosont is many Haitian andCap Verdian and appart of some Cap Verdian, those group rarely commit crime.
When I was there it was more about people working than doing crime. And overall I liked it there.

For the most part I agree with this. Cape Verdeans and Dominicans being the big exceptions for immigrant groups and crime.. .the city is definitely more about people working.
The only places in Boston I felt unsafe at night are Franklin Field and the Franklin Field Projects, Methadoone Mile and Grove Hall. I used to feel that way about Dudley Square too.
Plenty of places I keep alert but those are the only 3 I just wouldn't walk around in at night. Ive done Franklin Field and Grove Hall at night. That was more than enough.
