Most employees of DOD do not work in DC. And most of the contracted companies (sic tech, aerospace, manufacturing) are not in DC.

Lol um, the largest government contractors (Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, Bechtel, Booz Allen Hamilton, CACI, etc) with the exception of a few are headquartered or have major hubs in the DC area. That's pretty much the dominate industry here.

I haven't looked at the numbers in a while but the DC area and California have the largest share of DoD employees.

Probably Washington DC since the federal government will never seen a bust. Those Starbucks drinking bureaucrats will always have their comfy jobs funded by tax money from places like the Kansas heartland or Alabama farm country.

Besides that, most college towns have a consistent economy, obviously, though some of that is seasonal in nature based on the school year. Tuscaloosa's economy might be totally based on the University of Alabama, but the university will always be there no matter what. Unlike coal mines that can be shut down by government overregulation, steel mills that can close due to unfair trade agreements, or oil patch towns where the oil may run out.

Yep; it's called having a functioning government which is more important than ever in times of economic crisis.

I believe in part. The poster you replied to though extemely anti-government and liberal in general. Meant in part that many Midwestern and Northern states and its cities in general. Still sends -- more $$$ to DC then it gets back.

There is truth to that. Being anti-government. Isn't really about DC's World reach that is hugely by being a Nations Capitol by far. Not its non-government run museums and top eateries and intellectual base.

Many regions gain much by government contracts to its major industries. You find much of that is not in the Midwest and North in general today.

So much steered South and West in Tax $$$ that still DC the DC region gets a huge chunk.

DC proper pays more taxes per capita than any state in the entire nation. I thought it was well established that DC pays more than it receives.

DC pays more taxes per capita than any state in the nation.

D.C. Paid More In Federal Taxes Than 22 States Last Year

Cities that won’t recover: Philadelphia and Baltimore
Especially with the decline of comcast/xfinity. Philly has a lot to lose with the continued exodus of citizens. High crime and the rise of more competitive cities does not help either.
