Major cities on the edge of major mountain ranges:
Denver, CO or Salt Lake City, UT?
Offhand (w/o taking time to do a little investigating), I'll say Denver.
The lovely Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park isn't far away,
and there's city stuff too... the impressively-sited state capitol,
and an aquarium (I want to see what an aquarium in a dry
landlocked state looks like), plus funky little Boulder close by.
Maybe SLC has comparable attractions, but I don't know about them.

Pittsburgh or Cleveland?
Both would be good but Cleveland due to Cedar Point. Nashville or Austin?
Fort Smith. I've been to Fort Payne and there's not much there in the town itself, though there are some decent natural sites in the area. Fort Smith is much bigger so offers more for a tourist and is also someplace new that I've never been.

Fossil, Oregon or Dinosaur, Colorado?
Dinosaur so I can go to Dinosaur National Monument. Birmingham AL or Richmond VA?

Tough call. While I bet Birmingham would have some good things to do(i.e. Sloss Furnace), my gut feeling makes me think Richmond would have slightly more interesting neighborhoods, so I'll lean Richmond. Though I will say I don't think you'd do bad, visiting either city.

Mobile, AL, or Pensacola, FL?
I've been to both but I prefer Mobile. Especially for the historic home tours, food, Dauphin Island. Augusta ME or Frankfort KY?

Frankfort. It appears to have some old timey charm and a nice small collection of historic blocks. It's also close to Bluegrass Country and the Bourbon Trail. Maine has some nice destination town and cities, but Augusta is not one of them. It's pretty mediocre for a state capital.
White Mountain National Forest, NH or Adirondack Park, NY?

White Mountain. Never been to New Hampshire before. Acadia National Park on coastal Maine or Cape Cod National Seashore MA?

Acadia NP.... judging by Streetview images, it has a wider variety of landscapes.
Mt Rainier NP (WA) or Grand Teton NP (WY)?
