Wow, So Philadelphia is living in the year 1990 again ? The pandemic is most definitely to blame for the crime surge in cities across the country. Blame the government smh
That is a reason, but one of many. But I don't want to steer this thread into a debate. (unless you were being sarcastic about the blame the government part, I can never tell tones online).
Either way, it is sad to see homicides at or near record highs in so many cities.
Philly hit its record high of 501. Although 506 is the record murder rate. Which it will probably hit near the end of the week.
What does ''506 record murder rate'' mean?
500 was Philly's former record ''number'' of homicides in 1990; Philly, as of 11/28/21, is at 506.
As soon as this former record 1990 # of 500 was coming to an end, I've read folks suddenly posting and challenging this 1990 total of 500 as inaccurate.
New York City looks like it’s battling it out to either increase or decrease this year but the count is 3 less now than it was the same time last year. Let’s see what happens next month.

Since Philly has 28,000 more people today than in 1990 the 1990 murder rate is 506 at today’s population.
Population is just mundane numbers without the context of space.
I don't know about that. Gary, Indiana has about one homicide per sq mile annually and does not feel any safer than Chicago which has around 3 homicides per sq mile annually.

Got it.
Some folks are not using your method but challenged Philly's old 1990 record of 500 homicides, trying to tweak this number higher, up to 525...i guess in an effort to save the city's reputation or be in denial that this is happening or the reasons why.
So, using this method, wouldn't Chicago be over 1,000 homicides given its population loss since 1950 using its current murder rate of about 29/100,000?
