I really fear this spike is going to jeopardize or severely limit a lot of cities urban revival unless it subsides quickly. Places that were maybe of the edge of bad areas are firmly not pleasant.

Obviously the core attractive neighborhoods are going to be continued to be fine but a lot of cities are really about 4-6sq miles of nice urban neighborhoods. (Plus in same cases another group of nice suburban ones) And some of the marginal areas are backsliding

2021 year end homicide coming soon and outlook of this year

Minor update

Chicago is at 812 for 2021 which is on par with 2000-2003 the 80s and 90s decade was actually more deadly but despite Chicago increase in homicides and shootings the city overall crime rate is still down 60%-70% over that time. The feeling of dangerous city is still down 55% compare to 1980s and 1990s.

Philly 540 the record was 625 set in 1990 but it on par with 1992

New York City 466- Homicides is up slightly over 2020 the city dangerous levels are around 2013-2015

Jackson, MS population of 153,000-160,000 is at 148 homicides the rate is 96 per 100,000

Hampton, VA - 28 (20.4/100k)

Newport News, VA - 26 (14.3/100k)

Hampton is at 28 now after a woman shot in Phoebus, and a man shot in Newport News today in the Stuart Gardens area that was mentioned a couple pages back. Pretty ironic how I said it wasn't as bad anymore and then someone gets killed five days later...spoke too soon.

Also, Hampton has the lowest clearance rate in the area, at 44%. Portsmouth at 52%, VB 88%, Norfolk 62%, Newport News 78% (surprisingly high), and Chesapeake at 66%. Suffolk has 100%, as it only recorded 2 murders.

Chesapeake, VA - 17 (6.8/100k)

About in line with last year which had 16, but this is a city that average around 8-12 homicides a year so it's far above the usual the past couple years.

Jackson MS has seen more homicides per capita this month than some cities such as Fort Worth have seen all year.
Fort Worth population is just under a million with 108 or 109 total homicides this year; per capita rate is just under 11 per 100K
Jackson MS 19 homicides this month with a population of approximately 150,000; per capita rate well over 11 per 100K

Jackson is basically a war zone for such a small city.

Add those to the city number (58 is what was put here) and it's 92 in a population of 386,000, or a rate of nearly 24 per 100K.

A couple times in this thread a Pittsburgh poster was asking what was happening in Cincinnati, which is now up to 85 in 309,000. That's a rate of a little over 27 per 100k. Really, not too much different outside that Cincinnati's homicides are mainly confined to within city limits where some of Pittsburgh's worse areas happen to lie just outside city limits.
True. Pittsburgh has a lot of awful, violent, impoverished suburbs. Cincinnati does not. Pittsburgh has a lot of gorgeous, safe, affluent neighborhoods within city limits. Cincinnati does not (okay, I'll give you Mt. Adams, Hyde Park, Mt. Lookout, and OTR). Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are very comparable if you look at many metrics.

Where are seeing this 625 record in 1990? I can’t find documentation of that anywhere. Everything I read says 1990 was 500, and this year is a record high total.
