Pennsylvania is known as the Keystone State for several reasons.. historically it was the "keystone" of the 13 colonies both geographically and economically and it is seen as a blend of a few different regions of the country by many...
I find it to be solidly Northeast in character and culture. Others sometimes see it different.
So what state is most comparable to Pennsylvania based on?
The 1st state that comes to my mind when I hear Pennslvania mentioned is New York. The 1st state that comes to my mind when I hear New York mentioned is New Jersey. I don't know why that is.
New York, but only the upstate part. Philadelphia and New York City may have a bit of a connection though.
I see them as pretty similar, just with different urban ratios. NYS is 2/3rds NYC metro and 1/3 Upstate, PA is 1/3 Metro Philly, 2/3 rest of the state. Harrisburg:Albany, Allentown:Poughkeepsie, Scranton: Syracuse. Pittsburgh is Buffalo + Rochester. Adjust the pop ratios and PA goes deep Blue. Geographically, they are also pretty similar. Mix of Appalachian hills/great lakes plain. Only thing missing is no Long Island coast.
