Hi Cnote99, I'm an Olympia native currently living in Colorado. Olympia is great! it is a bit rainier than PDX and Seattle, but, it's smaller and much more affordable. Check out Boston Harbor area. It's out on the Sound and has stellar views of the Olympics.

You can access the Cascades via HWY 12, and skiing up at White Pass--very little traffic that direction. I know the region is growing, but it's still relatively uncongested compared with rest of I-5 corridor.

Schools are great and there is a ton to do for a small college/state capitol town. You are 1 hour to seattle, 2 to Portland. A year round farmers market, Capitol Forest is an up and coming MTB destination, plenty of great breweries and restaurants.

We'd be considering it if my family hadnt all moved to Bend and Redmond WA. I have very fond memories of growing up there.

Olympia is getting pricey. You can't even get a 1br or studio here anymore for less than $1000

Hey thank you!! We are definitely taking a look at Olympia. We will be visiting Washington and doing a tour from Bellingham down to Olympia next month. Really appreciate you sharing your experience!

Bellingham is beautiful. I loved the area when I took a trip up there. I'm down in Olympia but wouldn't mind living in Bellingham. My only issue would be it's nearly a 50 minute drive further from Seatac and my wife flys frequently. The airport in Vancouver is closer(1hr vs 1hr and 40minutes to seatac) but neither of us have passports and no clue how viable traveling across the border to fly is. That said, I do like the Olympia area as well. The metro area(Olympia/Tumwater/Lacey) is fairly centrally located and has everything we need. In terms of getting to points of interest, it's 1.5hrs to Portland, 1hr to Seattle, 30 minutes to Tacoma. For the national parks you are looking at 1.5hrs to Mt. Rainier and an hour to Olympic national park.
