For me it was between Colorado Springs, Flagstaff, Knoxville and Portland, ME.
I think Knoxville edges out these for overall economic opportunity, regional beauty, size, and restaurant/bar options. Portland was a close 2nd.
Flagstaff is much smaller than Knoxville, although in a beautiful area. Colorado Springs is too, but it does not feel as big as Knoxville, either, to me.
Riverside simply due to location. 1 hour to Los Angeles, 1.5 to San Diego, and under an hour to both the Pacific Ocean and mountains with alpine lakes and skiing in the winter.
You can make an argument for Reno. It’s close to Tahoe with Mount Rose as your local ski hill. I have friends with a house on a golf course above Truckee and another on a golf course in Reno. They telecommute and business travel using Reno as their airport. They can get 10 feet of snow pack at their Truckee house and they like being able to flip between skiing at Squaw and golf in Reno with an hour drive. They use tax-free Reno as their legal address and that more than pays for the house in tax savings. I have a couple other ski friends who live full time in Reno and drive up every day. They’re completely priced out of Tahoe.
Don't the top winners of each region advance to the next round of the bracket? Anyhow my vote goes to Knoxville TN due to the proximity to the Smokies.
I am really having a hard time wrapping my head around what all of these cities might have in common. There are a lot of college towns on the list, state capitals, some suburbs, and even a sizable city like El Paso. I struggle to think about how to compare many of them.
If it is only looking at town borders, that’s one thing. If it’s looking at metro, that’s something else. But the parameters here are hazy to say the least.
City Proper and Metropolitan Area, Portland wins.. handidly.
I picked El Paso even though it isn't a "lesser known" city.
