Hello everyone. I am thinking about moving to either the Saginaw area or the Green Bay area. I'm currently leaning on the Saginaw area as it's a bit closer to my family in Southern Indiana, but I've heard that Saginaw is a ghetto. Is this true?
There are plenty of suburban areas around Saginaw that are nice with no crime. It's in a pretty natural setting but the city itself has seen better days like most urban cores on that side of Michigan.
If you're looking for a more walkable/healthy urban experience Green Bay is probably a better bet. If you don't mind the more suburban lifestyle and being closer to family is more important you'll do just fine in Saginaw. I'd look in the northern parts along Titabawasee Rd, or to the west in the Saginaw Township(s) area. You can also find pleasant areas in the south around Bridgeport and Frankenmuth. Shopping, good schools, and low crime. Basically the opposite of Saginaw proper.

I'd also look in Shields/Thomas Township(Swan Valley SD) as well. Nearby Midland, which is home to Dow Chemical, would be a good option if you more of a city. It is NW of Saginaw.
Personally, in terms of an area in MI that is closer to IN, I'd look Kalamazoo, which historically is a similar area in terms of metro population to Green Bay.

The nicest township by far in Midland/Saginaw/Bay City metro area is Larkin Charter Township north of Midland. It is also far enough removed from Dow Chemical to not have any water quality issues that I'm aware of.
It also has one of the most impressive median house values to median household income ratios in the Midwest for those that secure higher paying positions:
Have you considered Holland, MI? Closer to Indiana, surprisingly lovely downtown, and has the wonderful little beach towns of Saugatuck/Douglas nearby. And for 'big town' amenities (like a Bass Pro Shop etc), Grand Rapids is like 30-40 mins away. I've always found the western shore of the state (both the towns and lakefront) more appealing than the Huron side.
