Oooops... yeah just saw the way I worded that, and, yeah totally meant to put that Boise was more compact than SLC-my other info makes mention of that but not sure how I switched the two out there! That is an advantage for Boise in terms of Downtown, just how compact it is.
I would agree, yeah it's really a big box vs. local shopping argument depending on what you are looking for.
The Greenbelt really is a gem, and I also really like the way so many cultural attractions and stops are linked along it, including Boise State campus, and the varying museums found, particularly in the Julia Davis Park area. You could spend all day just in the Julia Davis area and not see everything there is.
I haven't been to either, and am abstaining from voting. Though, from briefly exploring both downtowns on Street View, downtown Boise looks much nicer.
8th Street, the view the Downtown Boise link lands on is now closed to automobiles and is pedestrian and bike only and the restaurants are allowed to incorporate outdoor seating on the street. This street is also a gathering place for buskers/musicians and events.
Thankfully downtown Boise doesn't have a shopping mall.
Here is Main Street in Boise. Downtown Salt Lake lacks a street as narrow, active and pedestrian friendly as 8th Street (the map link JohnGuterson posted) in Boise.
