There aren't really any major metros there, but the Driftless Area deserves a shout-out. These pics are all in Dubuque County, IA (i.e. the Dubuque MSA, so not a tiny town). The region kinda feels like a slice of the West out on the prairie.

Duluth is definitely up there, especially if all of St. Louis County is included.

I live on the western edge of the Driftless Area and absolutely love it. La Crosse, WI is very similar to Dubuque.

I've always thought the Driftless Area felt more like a western version of Appalachia than the PNW.

Completely agreed. I suspect Madison is not getting more votes because people just aren't familiar with it. It's the only other US city besides Seattle that is located on an isthmus. Cincinnati is nice, but it has pretty typical river valley scenery.

As far as metro areas go I would have to say GR because of the scenic beaches / beach towns along Lake Michigan.

Not saying Mpls is more scenic than Madison but it has more than two lakes. It isn't called the city of lakes for no reason lol

Lots of places have lakes and rivers, but few have a big lake.

Cleveland has a nice mix of the great lakes lake Erie bluffs/beaches/islands with hillier terrain to the south. You can find valleys, gorges, hills within a few miles of the lake. Tons of spectacular parks: Chagrin Valley, Rocky Reservation, Cuyahoga Valley NP, Headlands Dunes, Edgewater Beach, Lakewood Park.
