Petersburg never struck me as that type of place so i'm guessing the crime surge is very recent.
Just recently a 15 y/o kid was sentenced to 30 years for killing 2 men as an ordered hit back in 2018. He was apparently a member of a local gang called OSG that's Crip affiliated. So yeah, there's def gang activity for its size, but most gang members are of some set of Bloods as is the case with most cities in VA. There's a few homegrown gangs like H$2X (High Life Hit Squad) and Z2 that were known to be violent with loose affiliations to Blood sets.

All in all, there's really no singular reason behind why these murders happen. They just do, a lot of the times for petty reasons or for no reason at all. There's no turf war between gangs or drug pushers to blame here.

Chicago is having a characteristically rough weekend, with the total for the year up to 210 people murdered. So sick of this.

Chicago- 208

16 year old male shot and killed near the Bean in Millennium Park downtown.

Three have been killed so far this sunny Saturday. Since the summer weather has hit all this week since Monday, the city has been seeing an average of 2 murders a day. Still, overall murders for the year are slightly down by 6% from statistics revealed for May 8th.

Damn.. Petersburg is that bad? I was there 12 years ago and it does seem like a decent run of the mill American type of town... its like Compton, you cant even tell whats good or bad.

Yes, Chicago, at least you are not Jackson or Memphis, well done.

Homicide totals are for individual victims, not incidents.

not anymore. Since the pandemic, downtown and the northside have seen dramatic increases in homicides that outpace many other major cities.

Just as shocked as you are.

Ain't it crazy how certain cities get to fly under the radar?. I'm sure state media still paints Richmond as some horrid warzone while Petersburg goes unnoticed.
