Another kind of interesting aspect is the murder/ shooting ratio, basically which city has better aim. Imho a better objective comparison.

City 2021 Fatal Shootings / Total Shootings / Gun Fatality Rate

Baltimore 293 / 1019 / 28.7 %
Philadelphia 486 / 2332 / 20.8 %
Chicago 747 / 4420 / 16.9 %

On average 1 in 3 die in Baltimore from gunshots. 1 in 5 in Philly and 1 in 6 in Chi-towns. Seeing all 3 have renowned medical facilities, these metric shows a distinct disparity in the nature of these homicides. I’d imagine 2022 rates are similar if not identical.

I think the main reason why Chicago is low on that list is due to the city having a lot more teenage shooters than every city in the country.

This has been a topic several times. Cities like New Orleans had one of the highest ratios, where almost half (46.8%) of all shooting victims end up dying (218 murders - 465 shooting victims in 2021). IIRC, Jackson is similar or higher, possibly 50-60%.

Rather than aim, could be caliber of weapons used (New Orleans is called "Chopper City" for a reason..) or the means of attack. N.O is particularly known for its high amount of headshot cases and close-up ambushes with high powered rifles. Little chance of survival.

Despite the high ratio, N.O doesn't have the highest non-fatal shooting rate in the country; which Chicago had a higher rate in 2021 at 133.8/100k and New Orleans at 121/100k.

Detroit - 166/100k
Philly - 110.3/100k
Baltimore - 124/100k
Milwaukee - 147/100k

For reference, NYC had a non-fatal shooting rate of 21/100k and LA had 35.9/100k.

Richmond - 25 | 11
Norfolk - 24 | 10
Hampton - 13 | 9.4
Portsmouth - 12 | 12.2
Chesapeake - 12 | 4.8
Virginia Beach - 11 | 2.3
Newport News - 9 | 4.8
Petersburg - 8 | 23.9
Fairfax County - 7 | 0.6
Roanoke - 6 | 5.9
Henrico County - 6 | 1.7
Suffolk - 4 | 4.2
Prince William County - 4 | 0.8
Hopewell - 3 | 13

“Senseless murders”

“He was a good person didn’t bother nobody”

Media panders to already scared suburbanites of the city.

I guarantee 90% of those victims were involved in the streets like they always are.

Not excusing the violence whatsoever but let’s not act like these people are innocent law abiding citizens who were killed at random no matter how much the news wants people to believe that. Some of them are murders, thieves or sell drugs. You do dirt, don’t be surprised if dirt comes back to you.

And most incidents were in sections of the city that no suburbanite or tourist would even go near.

Yep. The Penns Landing shooting is the only one affecting a high profile area, although still of course upsetting. The fact that these senseless teens that act entirely with emotion and no sense of logic are getting their hands on weapons is what is creating so much of this madness.

It also seems like Philadelphia's gun violence is becoming even more concentrated in North Philly neighborhoods based on recent reports. I'd be interested in seeing statistics compared to prior years, but I wouldn't be surprised if North Philly neighborhoods were driving all of the violence increases in the past few years citywide. That section of the city is just off-the-charts with shootings/violence. It absolutely is crying out for a dramatic intervention, and it needed it yesterday.
