Buffalo, Rochester and Newburgh used to compete for the sad title of “murder capital” in New York State. Even though it’s not listed, I did a search and I don’t think Newburgh had more than three murders in 2022, leaving them at roughly 10.7/100k. Quite a drop from last decade.
Buffalo would be at 57 if we’re including the mass shooting victims (we should be). That’s 20.5/100k. Of course Niagara Falls being a violent adjacent city is noteworthy and fairly unique for Upstate cities, however for purposes of tracking murders we’ll stick with city proper statistics as reported.
But Rochester remains in the unfortunate position of being the leader in homicides with a per capita rate of 36.2/100k. That’s not to mention 300 shootings and 348 shooting victims during 2022. Another brutal year for a city that desperately needs help.

A lot of the smaller Upstate cities have seen drops in homicides. Binghamton must have had a recent homicide, as they were at 1 like a week or two ago. A lot them aren’t even at 10/100,000 in terms of rates. I’m curious about places like Auburn, Elmira and Rome that have facilities that can give them an underserved bad rep in parts or Ithaca, Saratoga Springs and Kingston, which have nightlife that can attract people from other areas.
Syracuse saw a decline from last year, with a rate of about 12.5/100,000. That number is actually high for Albany, but is still just under 20/100,000.
Generally homicide rates seem to have receded since 2021? Philly down from 564 to 514, Rochester from 88 to 76, Chicago dropped over 100 homicides. Cuyahoga county behind 2021 as well, But way elevated from 2019.

Newburgh ended with 4 actually, so 13.8/100k. In the 3-4 years prior to that 2010 murder capital total, Poughkeepsie had a higher murder rate; and also in the following years until 2015 (IIRC Poughkeepsie was the murder capital in 2013). Newburgh always had the worse rep. For the past decade though, the average has been about 4-6 homicides so it's right in line with the usual.

If your going to breakdown DC geographically than it will be balance to do the same for Jackson & Gary. SE DC to West Jxn & likewise for Gary.
North Jackson: Largest by area ( 54 sq.mi) & population (85K). There's a distinction between Northwest & Northeast Jackson being split by I-55. Majority of homicides on this side of the city occurs in NW side low income neighborhoods while NE side have the smallest number of incidents. 2 Police precincts covers the northside while the other sections have 1 each.

•2019: 31 (36/100K)
•2020: 59 (69/100K)
•2021: 83 (97/100K)
•2022: 81* (95/100K)
Of course its apples to oranges but SE (ward 8) would be comparable to North Jackson although ward 8 is only about 8.7 sq miles.

Breaking it down for all cities might be true in a statistical sense, I'm just not sure if that can be applied to reality though. Jackson and Gary are much smaller in population vs. D.C. Washington would naturally have more non dangerous sides/hoods compared to Jackson.
Jackson just has more bad blocks in relation to it's size but they're both most likely the same amount of danger with it even leaning towards the DC hoods.
The way I look at it is like this... In California we got South central LA and Compton.
Compton always had the higher murder rates compared to LA but the most infamous gangs in the area are usually the big ones in South Central or the Latino ones in West LA.

For some reason, I always thought of Yonkers as a very working-class, semi-gritty city. Is the city far more affluent than I thought? And if not, how does it stay so safe?
