I’m a beer fanatic.. Just like judging a local food scene, I love trying local beer when traveling.
Whether it’s creativity, “culture”, raw amount of breweries... What say you? Please include your local breweries worth trying!
My “Big 5” Metros:
New York City
Boston
LA
Portland (OR)
Denver / Boulder
FYI: I did not include cities like Portland (ME), Burlington (VT) , or Asheville (NC). Yes they have great beer, but no they cannot stand up to major metros.
Wisconsin (surprise!) has a solid craft-beer scene across the state, though oddly enough I wouldn't say Milwaukee is necessarily a stand-out metro in that regard. The overall scene is fed by tons of solid little breweries in little towns all across the state. It makes a great premise for sightseeing the whole state, and in fact the wife and I did just that a couple of times before we had kids.
I live three blocks from “Beer Boulevard”, 30th Street, which features countless breweries, brew pubs and tasting rooms - “Burp!”
GREAT beer town... My issue is quality vs quantity. There was a day when Modern was a world class brewery, but those days are long gone. What are the top breweries these days?
In CA, tough to take on broader LA. Like anything else, there’s a mess load of great breweries and beers.
Aside from Hop Butcher and the small batches from Goose, what makes you say that?
Places like Maplewood, Moore, Marx..... Meh.
tbf, Chicago has the best inventory of bottled international beer. I can find nearly all beers I enjoyed in Europe at some time, in Chicago. That has to be worth something?
Interesting thread. I'm in. I travel a lot and drink beer (and whiskey), so this is relevant to my interests.
I think PDX wins hands down. There's local breweries on every corner, in every little neighborhood. Its a true beer town.
I will say that there have been some really good beers that have come out of SoCal, and I also don't think of NYC as a beer city.
Portland was, is, and will always be a world class beer town. Commercial success aside. Seattle, take note.
As for New York... It’s... Well, it’s a wagon. Other Half, Finback, Grimm, Singlecut, Torch, Gun Hill. I’d say NYC is high on quality, low on quantity, which is counterintuitive. But it’s a great beer town in the boroughs.

Idk what you mean. Binny’s is an incredible liquor store with loads of imports... Maybe that’s where you’ve been?
If you mean the stouts - Like Bourbon County and Deth’s Tar, etc. They’re good, great even. But I’ll take an Alchemist Beelzebub or Great Notion Double Stack or Maine Fall Coffee right up there, or over those. And that porter/stout style is really what people have decided Chicago does well (aside from hop butcher NEIPAs).
The seemingly weekly / monthly Porter or Stout releases from Tree House or Trillium blow doors off of the comps in Chicago, to be honest.
