I know these two cities are pretty different but I’m trying to choose between the two to live in. Can anyone give me some insight into how they compare in terms of:
Outdoor activities nearby
Cost of living/Quality of life
Diversity of natural surroundings
Cultural things to do
Culture/people
How easy it is to make friends
Gay friendliness
Anything else you think is a big pro or con of each
Outdoor Activities: Boston (Cape Cod, Beaches, Mountains, Proximity to Whites, Coastal Maine and Newport)
Cost of Living: Charlotte (About 40% Cheaper)
Diversity if Natural Surroundings: Boston. (Charlotte is white and black. Not diverse really)
Cultural Things To Do: Boston (Chinatown, North End, Jewish Areas, Vietnamese Areas, etc. also more museums if thats what your asking.)
How easy to make friends: Charlotte (Boston is much harder to make friends
Gay Friendliness: Boston (no question)
Walkability: Boston
Climate: Charlotte
They are both very different cities. Boston is a diverse, fast paced bustling city with global importance so everything will be marked up. In return, Charlotte is a clean, newer city with a huge edge finance and with great weather.
Boston pros: Larger metro with more things to do, more urban, infrastructure matches population, gay friendly, progressive, world class institutions, great restaurants.
Boston cons: Feels provincial at times, expensive, crime and run down areas more prevalent hateful winter weather.
Charlotte pros: Fast growing region, business and family friendly, lower cost of living, nice and clean city
Charlotte cons: Suburban style development patterns, conservative, overtly religious, not as friendly to gay people, still not much cultural identity.

Boston has lower crime than Charlotte actually. (Although Charlotte is not a dangerous city)

Other Boston pros:
- more sports (all 4 major sports leagues + MLS). Charlotte is missing MLB and NHL
- more concerts
- better public transportation
- more compact/urban
- better connected to other cities
- better food in general
Other Charlotte pros:
- better weather
- easier to navigate
- faster-growing metro
Charlotte has hiking opportunities at Crowders Mountain State Park, which is in the metro region. They also have the National White Water center in the metro, and Lake Norman for boating recreation.
I love Boston and I’m sure they have great amenities being near the coastline.

Neither are what I would consider to be dangerous. Boston has higher violent crime while Charlotte has higher property crime. Given significant differences in city limits, Boston likely comes out on top because ring cities won't be included in the stats.

Due to reporting differences and legal discrepancies between states, I only really look at Homicide rate. Charlotte’s is like ~80% higher. But isn’t very high in the grand scheme of things.
Although I’d agree Boston neighborhoods have to be like two tiers above Charlotte ones to look nicer. So it’s probably more run down.
