FiDi Manhattan is Downtown. No debate. Brickell Miami is Downtown for Miami. Boston's Downtown, is Downtown. Theres no question about that. Are they all the most vibrant, busiest parts of their respective cities? Nein. But are they downtown? Ayah.

Probably 1%

And how much time in Boston and Boston media is devoted toward 'challenging' Puritan ideals? Like a lot of it. How much is written about the "New/Changing Boston"? A lot. Both of these last two mayors are doing what they can to open the city up ore but they face red tape from a state legislature that epitomizes inertia. You can still have fairly weak nightlife and be a relatively glamorous city. I don't know that Tacos at 3 am as opposed to at 12am makes a city glamorous. It can't be THAT Puritan considering it has looser alcohol laws than many southern states (selling on Sunday, selling to 11 BUT no happy hour) and also has legalized marijuana and also was the first place to legalize same-sex marriage.

New Orleans is plenty fun-who calls it Glamorous? Not a soul. LA has a 2 am closing time and nimbyism but it is still glamorous.

I also don't think I called Boston rundown, certainly not any of the neighborhoods I'm talking about. I have called the worst parts of Boston a bit more rundown than Charlotte recently. That's probably true. I also haven't called Boston "boring" in years. Maybe in relation to New York, yes it is boring, but in general? Absolutely not.

You think flashy means glamorous. it does not. I never called Boston flashy. Lots and lots and lots of flashy people in unglamorous cities and situations. Elegance, poshness and sophisitcation are just as much a part of Glamour. Take Glamour Magazine as case and point.

This is very true.

It is fair easier to box or border other downtown areas in other cities. It's exceedingly difficult in Boston, in large part because the downtown, in my mind, is L shaped from North Station, to South Station, west to the Pru. It's within that L that you find very little residential nodes, and 0 family dwellings/"brownstones".

Would anyone consider this "not downtown", when it's one connected strip of commercial buildings, mid rises, and high rises? https://www.google.com/maps/@42.3484...7i16384!8i8192

https://www.google.com/maps/@42.3597...7i16384!8i8192

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ca...!4d-71.0566918

Or even this? https://www.google.com/maps/@42.3647...7i16384!8i8192

In Boston, that L shape is what I think most would agree is downtown. East/south/southwest of the Common until you hit highway or the drink.

IJS there's no official Downtown Boston. There is a downtown New York. It's literally called 'Downtown' or lower Manhattan. As opposed to Midtown and Uptown or Upper Manhattan. There's nothing to debate. Downtown Boston is truly how you define it. We all know when we're Downtown though.

Each link gives you a different "Downtown".

What is Chicago's downtown? How about San Francisco?

Are we limiting downtowns, to only the Financial District?

I didn't know there was a Downtown Boston. I think we always called it the South Station area/Financial District. But is that really more part of downtown than the Pru, Coply, DTX, the Greenway?

Side topic over Boston yet again.

A we ain't got a "downtown".
or no one defines a official one.
or we do not call it by that term.
or it is bigger than you say or smaller.
A Boston cannot be limited to a city-proper like ever.

* "Downtown definition" from Wikipedia:
- Downtown is a term primarily used in North America by English speakers to refer to a city's sometimes commercial, cultural and often the historical, political and geographic heart. It is often synonymous with its Central Business District (CBD). Downtowns typically contain a small % of a city’s employment. In some metropolitan areas it is marked by a cluster of tall buildings, cultural institutions and the convergence of rail transit and bus lines. In British English, the term "city centre" is most often used instead.

*** This is at least what Goggle Street-View has typing in "Downtown Boston". Guess it excludes Chinatown here in a odd boundary? IRONY is a Chicago and Philadelphia, will NOT give you any boundary if you type in downtown for them cities.

THESE GOOGLE MAPS STREET-VIEWS. ALL WORK ON MY LAP TOP WITH BOUNDARIES. Just do not on my phone showing a boundary.

BOSTON DOWNTOWN - According to Goggle Maps/Street-View.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Do...!4d-71.0572053

Google Maps/Street-View of the "Boston Financial District".

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Fi...!4d-71.0549768

I get this boundaries map for -- "Downtown Los Angeles, CA". with Skid Row in the center.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Do...4d-118.2517828

Also boundaries for the LA - "Financial District/Central Business District". Type in EITHER term and BOTH come up in boundaries as LA's Financial District · Los Angeles, CA.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Fi...4d-118.2570478

Type in Downtown Philadelphia, PA and you will NOT get any boundary just the city map and general map again with no boundary under Financial District either. You need to type in "Center City Philadelphia, PA" to get the map of a boundary for a downtown Philly.

Center City · Philadelphia, PA

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ce...!4d-75.1574567

Downtown Chicago on Goggle Maps -- gets you NO boundary map from Goggle Street-View under the term of - "downtown Chicago". Nor a Financial District boundary nor a Central Business District. I am sure I used to get a boundary of just the Loop for one of them. Not anymore.

Again, the "City of Chicago" does define its own "CBD of Chicago" and that --- I use as its basic downtown boundary.

"Downtown Atlanta, GA" Goggle Maps/Street-View.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Do...!4d-84.3883717

For Houston, I get it all in terms terms WITH a boundary for "downtown AND CBD".

Downtown Houston, TX

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Do...!4d-95.3573194

"Central Business District Houston" -- gets a shift southward a bit still a area nearly the size of the downtown one yet adding a area and removing one.

Central Business District · Houston, TX

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ce...!4d-95.3651679

Again, these Google boundaries come up on my Lap Top, but NOT exactly on my Phone. Maybe on yours?

Wow, on another thread I guessed downtown Chicago would be Lake/1-94/Roosevelt/Chicago Ave. Other than the little blip at the top there, I was exactly in line with this map!

If CBD = Downtown (im in planning, i dont have an exact consensus on downtown, but i think thats an acceptable definition.

I agree with your definition. I google downtown xxx and get an outline a bit. But idk. Its a rough estimate.

Ie, for Boston i dont think downtown seeps into Chinatown or Southie at all.

How does Boston not seep into Chinatown if per google maps- it’s surrounds Chinatown on three sides? But as I posted earlier there are 6,7,8 different definition of downtown Boston. None of them are official.

Nowadays we call Seaport Seaport or Fort Point and it’s much more inline with downtown than South Boston. In the past it was separated by an elevated expressway but now it’s not. So the neighborhood definition have changed.

Same thing as Mission Hill. Mission Hill became nice in the late 1990s and it is no longer considered Roxbury. It’s generally considered a whole other neighborhood. This is akin to East Village and LES in Manhattan.
