Unfortunately, I’d be working in the heart of any city I move to including these. There are some remote days but it’s pretty rare (once every week or two weeks). My job also requires me to be in all areas of the city and walking around late at night everywhere. It can be a dangerous job but without going into what I do, my job prepares me for it with ‘protection’.

I’m saying that, I suppose there are areas I simply cannot live. I would not mind paying less for a sketchy area that is being worked on, but due to my job I have to be careful. Thus, there are more options in HOU I feel.

You literally described pockets east of downtown Houston. Most Houstonians and transplants don't live near plants or in polluted areas. That community of color is 5th ward. Fascinating how you reduce a huge metro of over 7 million people down to 5th ward and other poverty stricken areas in close proximity to oil refineries as if OP would move to those areas anyway.

Also you do realize that Jacksonville's communities of color are also in close proximity to hazardous industrial sites and paper mills which also leaves a bad smell throughout their communities among other safety hazards. Unfortunately this is all too common in low income minority communities.

Anytime a person want's to paint Houston in a negative light they resort to the one area of Houston that has the less population when compared to other parts of the metro. When you start mentioning the oil refineries that's how I know you never been to Houston.

As far as OP, if being close to your home state, laid back atmosphere and beaches are a top priority than by all means choose Jacksonville. I think Houston is a better city imo because it has more to offer but the traffic, weather, and crime can and will impact your move especially if you've never visited the city before. Houston is definitely a city you have to visit to know if it's right for you.

I've lived in Houston and visited Jacksonville. Jacksonville reminds me of Houston 30 year behind the TX city.

Absolutely better. Fresher, unfussy, and sourced locally. Absolutely not dominated by Sysco type processing - blech.

My God what two horrible choices!
I heard that Jacksonville is close to Florida though!
