I was reading about how Seattle has more people living alone than in any other city in America. Which got me thinking about being childfree and which cities would be best for couples who are childfree.

New York -- tiny apartments, great nightlife, numerous bars and restaurants where you can eat solo

While I could see what a couple with children would look at (schools, playgrounds, kid activities), I’m not sure what a child free couple would be looking at beyond the standard amenities that we all look at.

Technically any big city, but New York is the ultimate answer, especially if the couple makes great money.

The super easy answer here is New York City.

The list of rankings in my opinion would go like this--

10 Atlanta
9 DC
8 Philadelphia
7 Miami
6 Seattle

5 Boston
4 Chicago
3 Los Angeles
2 San Francisco

1 NYC

Most urban cities will be good. I hear many who have no use for a 4k sq ft home in the suburbs after the kids leave home.

St Louis is a good city for those on a budget who want a small big city city with easy living.

Chicago and Philadelphia will give the best value for those value conscious but crave a big city sophisticated lifestyle.

NYC and San Francisco is epic. Make sure you have your money together.

Good points and good advice!

And I agree--to enjoy all that NYC has to offer--and San Francisco, well, it's pricey.

As a couple in either city, you'll need to make baseline of about $150k together, and much higher, to live decently and thrive here--and there.

I think the outdoorsy cities like Denver, Seattle, and the Bay Area make sense for this. CoL isn't as much of an issue for a childless couple and neither is middling nightlife / single scenes. NYC makes sense if you aren't into the outdoorsy stuff, that'd be my personal pick easily (or maybe LA).

Do DINKs have a particular love of the outdoors that single people and families with kids do not?

Based on my experience it is a lot hard to do that stuff with kids. It costs more, takes longer to do things, conflicts with other kids activities: sports, bday parties, etc.
