St. Louis's economy is noticeably more than double Louisville's (as it should be due to the size differences), St. Louis has a lower unemployment rate, more job openings with many more larger companies with higher earnings potential:

St. Louis 18
Louisville 4

St. Louis 3.2 (Rank 28th)
Louisville 3.7 (Rank 39th)
My reasoning was pretty much exactly what Landolakes90 said. I just didn't think it warranted another response. But his/her post to me was spot on. I did also mention that Louisville wasn't substantially ahead of STL. My rational was also more on growth. Here's a thread on C-D that shows GDP growth this past decade. It shows Louisville had more growth than STL.

I don't put much stock in to the unemployment rate but both are doing great. I sure wouldn't get caught up over half a percent either.

Edit...beaten above
Just to quantify this a bit, Kroger has a market share of 43% in Louisville Walmart is second place at 22%, and everyone else is single digits. In fact, if you add the market share of the 5 companies behind Kroger in Louisville, you'd still have less market share than Kroger. So while it is true that Louisville has a Publix now, and they have 4 Meijer locations in Louisville (and 2 across the river), Kroger dominates the market by a wide margin. The biggest competitors to Kroger are department stores that sell groceries, not stores like Kroger where grocery is the core business.

You can say my name. St. Louis was 86th place for percentage jobs gained. St. Louis had a 2.2% gain. Louisville had a 3.2% gain over the same period. St. Louis continues to lose population. Some companies have moved out as well.
