Both cities have plenty of housing opportunities inside the downtown core if that is the lifestyle one prefers.

Greenville might have the edge because there's a grocery store within a few blocks of downtown. Knoxville has a Publix that is a free trolley ride away and a smaller market but that's not the same.

No reason for anyone to be embarrassed that many of their fellow citizens prefer or find they can afford less dense housing.

Ivan, if you re-read my post you'll see I noted 77k was the population of Knoxville in 1920. It's a coincidence that happens to be the population of Greenville today.

I'm well aware that Greenville anchors a much larger area. The same can be said about Knoxville but not so disproportionately. The Urban Areas are 400k and 558 k in 2010.

So not that big of a difference now but the difference was much greater in 1920. The historic architecture reflects that.

How so? Greenville's urbanized area stretches into Anderson County which immediately borders Greenville County. In 2011, 25% of Anderson County residents commuted to Greenville County for employment and that figure is likely higher today.
