OP I know nothing about cost of living and am not an expert in neither city. I do know 100% certain though is that there’s a huge, ongoing Mandarin/Chinese speaking community in Vegas, has been in the recent years. (in particular during/after Covid.) There is a sizable Chinese community in ATL as well but I’d venture to guess there are more in Las Vegas.
If you read/speak Mandarin, you can find the groups on Facebook. I don’t know them personally, I mostly read (never post but like to keep up.) so I’m kept in loop of the growing community and many Chinese/Taiwanese restaurants (including boba tea of course.) and housing. There’s a formerly journalist-turned-casino-blackjack-dealer (I think he’s in Venetian.) guy who’s been the community leader in Vegas, (if you decide to go with Vegas, that is.) I can hook you up with his info on Facebook.
There are two 99 Ranch Markets in Vegas and one in ATL. Information like this tells you roughly if there are Chinese-speaking demographics in the given city.
I’m surprised everyone is going with Vegas. I’m not saying they’re wrong, but Atlanta has a lot to offer as it’s a much larger city. And it’s not 115f in the summer.
He'd be in Marietta or at least commuting to Marietta though probably would want to stick pretty close to Marietta since it's a medical residency. I'd probably say Atlanta if it was Atlanta proper, but Marietta is very much the 'burbs and this guy is young. Weather-wise, I don't personally like either, but they are quite different from each other so I'd chalk that up to personal preferences.
This depends on your personality and interests. Atlanta has a more traditional business/conservative overall vibe, filled with strivers. Vegas sounds better if you are a bit adventurous and unconventional.
In my mind, Las Vegas would offer lack of humidity, mountains, deserts, proximity to LA, and a strain of people who are happy to do their own thing.
Atlanta would offer more conventionally beautiful weather, neighborhoods, and people but also would attract more conventional type people who are eager strivers wanting to succeed in the corporate world.
So do you like the west, proximity to California, and a libertarian mindset, or do you like a place that is filled with tasteful people striving to succeed and live in tasteful neighborhoods with tasteful, successful friends? If you can answer that question you should be able to feel your way into choosing the right city.
Hi all, I am a 25 M Asian looking to start my medical residency next year in one of these places. I'll be making 60k. Specifically I would be in either Marietta for the Atlanta metro or Las vegas proper.
Factors I am considering
- Asian community (specifically Chinese would be nice), food, shopping
- access to nature for day trips
- being relatively close to other cities for day trips or weekend trips
- safety
- overall vibe for young people
- dating
- weather
Thank you!
Las Vegas. As a Las Vegan, we would greatly appreciate you coming to our city.
So a random list done in 2017 by smarter traveler is the end all be all? Also that random site focuses on travel so yeah Atlanta might not be the most exciting place to visit as a tourist when compared to New Orleans, Charleston or Miami (the 3 cities she suggest people go to instead of Atlanta) but it's plenty to do when you live in the city.
Hey here's an opinion for you, Miami imo is vastly overrated and Charleston is good for a weekend vacation. Anything after that 2nd day and you've seen just about any and everything.
Atlanta is definitely boring in comparison to Vegas. But do you really want to live somewhere you’re tempted to spend so much money?
