I live in a suburb in Massachusetts. The widest street is the highway, which is 6 lanes (3 in each direction). Other than that, the widest street is 4 lanes (2 in each direction). Every other street here is 2 lanes, 1 in each direction.

Thats not true. First of all, people use the breakdown lane as another lane. But secondly, The northern half of the SouthEast expressway is 4 lanes on each side, so 8 lanes total and up by southbay interchange on the expressway, there are even more lanes from onramps and such.
edit:
The oneill tunnel is 5 lanes wide at certain points so 10 lanes on each side of tunnel.
Also the Zakim Bridge is the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world and boasts a total of 10 lanes for traffic

The part of the highway (495) that goes through my town is 6 lanes, 3 on each side.
I've lived in L.A. and Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires has the 9 de julio, which is just a city street, and I don't even know how many freakin' lanes it has. Supposedly the widest city street in the world, or so they claim.
L.A. has the 405 freeway which is ridiculously wide.

Yeah, 9 De Julio street in Buenos Aires is 18 lanes wide, and it's just a city street.
It was pretty crazy crossing that thing when I took a trip down there a few years ago. I'd love to go back though! Buenos Aires was easily one of the nicest and most beautiful cities I've ever seen.
Most of the highways in NJ are 6 lanes (3 on each direction!)
