I don't know about that. El Paso may not be that big, but it has somewhat of a noticable identity.

I think most Americans know where El Paso is. At the very least, they know it's in Texas. I'd say it's the fifth most famous Texas City (behind Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin) and it might be more famous than Austin.

Among the 10 largest cities, I'd say San Jose, San Antonio and Phoenix.

Then again, after 552 miles of endless, isolated travel from San Antonio on I-10, it'd be hard not to notice.

Not necessarily. That city has a charm all its own, with hills to the west of town and a burgeoning downtown fixture. Granted, said hills are not the Franklin Mountains, but they still lend a nice touch to the western horizon. Austin has a definite advantage over El Paso.
