I voted for North Carolina, but I'm a Texan...haha but some parts of Texas are just as good! But overall North Carolina. The weather is just like I like it and it's scenic.
To live: Tennessee. Not only does it have the BEST balance of weather of any southern state (looking at summer heat and winter cold), but it also has some of the most scenic and enjoyable riverfront pedestrian experiences (parks/plazas) anywhere in the South. It also has the best and most demonstrative uses of the pedestrian bridge in the entire south, with the Shelby Street pedestrian bridge and the Two Rivers Greenway pedestrian bridge, both over the Cumberland River in Nashville, and the Walnut Street pedestrian bridge (2nd longest in the nation) over the Tennessee River in Chattanooga. Chattanooga's got one of the best aquariums in the nation, and Nashville has the only full size replica of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.
It's got the mountains in the eastern part of the state (Lookout Mountain/Gatlinburg), rolling hills in the center, and some of the best barbecue in America in Memphis. It does the "walking around downtown to the local eating hangout spots" thing better than most Southern states with downtown Chattanooga around Market Street, 2nd Street in Nashville, and Beale Street in Memphis.
And gators aren't a concern.
1st Runner up is Texas.
To visit: Florida.
