I definitely think SF...the song "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" was written by Otis Redding on a houseboat docked at Waldo Pier in Sausalito.

It means different places for different people. People most commonly know the bay as san francisco bay area.

San Francisco. As evident from the poll results thus far, I think most people (East or West Coast) consider the Bay Area to refer to the San Francisco metro.

However, I think most Floridians think of the Bay Area as the Tampa Bay area. But outside of the Tampa metro, I don't people refer to the Tampa Bay Area as just the "Bay Area."

North Bay, Ontario, which is where I happen to live. The Bay is the city's main nickname.

If you say "the Bay Area" then most people think SF metro. "The Bay" alone, is a bit too general.
