Not really. Almost all of Silicon Valley is in San Jose metro.

The biggest Silicon Valley companies are all in San Jose MSA, and making huge investments in suburbia, nowhere near SF.

Google is building a giant new HQ in Mountain View, Apple is building a giant new HQ in Cupertino, Facebook is building a giant new HQ in Menlo Park. Palo Alto is still dominated by H-P, Redwood Shores is still dominated by Oracle.

There are tech companies in SF too, and it's very important for the industry, but the cluster is nowhere near the might of Silicon Valley.

SJ is the 800lb gorilla in SV I think we both can agree but San Francisco has been a magnet attraction for SV companies on their expansion. Most SV execs would include the area from DTSF to DTSJ as SV now unquestionably

btw some of those cos in SV have offices in San Francisco too

Now we sit in a state with first class education capitals and a budget surplus. The SF Bay Area's GDP is growing faster than China. Our downtown hasn't been this hot ever. San Francisco defines the US growth potential IMO.
Seriously?

How exactly is San Francisco going to "stop this nation in its tracks?"

Geographically no, tech business wise, definitely yes now. But by no means is it comparable to Santa Clara. Interestingly, people started opening businesses in SOMA b/c the real estate was cheaper than peninsula places like Palo Alto.

True, SF is important and growing in importance, because young workers often prefer urban areas. You see lots of tech employers now in SF, not just workers taking the bus down the Peninsula. But the epicenter is still around SJ, and I don't think that will change with such massive investments you see from industry leaders like Apple, Google, Oracle, etc.

The Apple HQ will have a bigger footprint than the Pentagon. That's absolutely huge!

Because its one of the few cities that HQ major employment industries.

What do you think happens to all those 'Silicon ____' cities if there is a dotcom bust II. If finance in NYC goes bust, it can stop this nation in its tracks too. You can understand the big pic now

Just think about the social, economic, and political upheaval not being able to check-in or update your Facebook status would bring! Can you imagine a world where you couldn't tweet?!?!

Tech companies slamming into a brick wall would harm SF just as much as the rest of the country, except the rest of the country has less invested in the tech industry by comparison to the Bay Area.

I fail to see how an event that would require San Francisco's economy to take a beating means that San Francisco can "can stop this country in its tracks."
